The Conversion of Orestes Brownson

1844

Orestes Brownson was a major figure in 19th-century American intellectual life. A member of the circle of the New England Transcendentalists and Unitarians which included Theodore Parker, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Margaret Fuller, Brownson's decision to become Catholic—a religion perceived to be socially and intellectually backward—disturbed his former friends and created a sensation among the American intellectual elite.
