The First Plenary Council of Baltimore

May 9–20, 1852

Marking the maturation of the American Church, its first national council of bishops met in the primatial see of Baltimore. Six archbishops and thirty-five suffragans dealt with a variety of organizational matters, as well as issues pertaining to the novel situation of a minority Church within a predominantly Protestant country (such as marriage between Catholics and non-Catholics).
