Josephites arrive in Baltimore

1871

The Mill Hill missionaries were founded in 1866 by Cardinal Herbert Vaughan in London, for the purpose of ministering to Africans. Formally the Missionary Society of St. Joseph (thus "Josephites"), four of the congregation's priests came to the United States to work with newly freed slaves. The Josephites quickly spread to Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
