McCollum v. Board of Education

Decided March 8, 1948

The Supreme Court of the United States struck down an arrangement in Illinois whereby public school students were released, during the school day and using school facilities, to take voluntary religious instruction. The Court cited the 1947 Everson case, which had introduced the language of "wall of separation" between church and state.
