Founding of The Pilot

1829

The oldest Catholic newspaper in the United States, The Pilot was founded by Bishop Fenwick as The Jesuit. Other titles over the years included The Catholic Sentinel, United States Catholic Intelligencer, and the Boston Pilot. Under lay control for a time (including editor Patrick Donahue), it was purchased by the diocese in 1876 and became the official diocesan paper in 1908.
