Father Abram Ryan (1839–1886)

Ryan was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and volunteered as Confederate army chaplain shortly after ordination. Author of "Conquered Banner," his verse became wildly popular in the South. After the war he worked for Catholic periodicals in New Orleans and Augusta; he died in Louisville.
