David Goldstein (1870–1958)

Apologist

Born to Jewish parents in London, Goldstein came to the US with his family in 1888. Working at a cigar factory in Boston, Goldstein became enamored by Marxism and joined Martha Moore Avery as a radical agitator for the working class. When Avery converted to Catholicism (1904), Goldstein was exposed to the Church's social teaching (such as Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum), entered the Church in 1905, and became an activist focusing on the Church's teaching against socialism. The Knights of Columbus sponsored a national tour for the talented lecturer in 1914 and he continued speaking under the organization's auspices for the next decade. In 1917, he founded, with Avery, the Catholic Truth Guild, and in 1936, the Catholic Campaigners for Christ.
