Father Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin (1770–1840)

Russian Prince, "Apostle of the Alleghenies"

Born to an aristocratic Russian family in Holland, Gallitzin converted to Roman Catholicism at age seventeen. He arrived in Baltimore in 1792, entered the seminary there, and was one of the first priests ordained in the United States. He was a pioneer of the church in western Pennsylvania and established the town of Loretto as a center of the faith in that region.
