Edwin O'Connor, quoted in the Encyclopedia of American Catholic History:
"I would like to do for the Irish in America what Faulkner did for the South."
Born and raised in Rhode Island, O'Connor worked as a journalist in Boston. His novel, The Last Hurrah (1956), was made into a feature film and secured him fame and financial success. In 1962, he won a Pulitzer for The Edge of Sadness.
