Father Gabriel Richard (1767–1832)

"Second Founder" of Detroit

Born in France, Richard came to the United States in 1792. He established many Catholic and other institutions in the nascent city of Detroit, including the school that would become the University of Michigan. He brought the first printing press into the territory of Michigan and began publishing the region's first periodical, "Michigan Essay and Impartial Observer" in 1809. Recognition of his leading civic role was manifested in his election as delegate to Congress from the Michigan Territory.
