George Gipp (1895–1920)

Notre Dame football star

Born in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Gipp went to Notre Dame on a baseball scholarship. Coach Knute Rockne recruited him for the football team and Gipp became one of the greatest all-around players in college football history. He died of pneumonia near the end of the 1920 season. He was baptized as a Catholic shortly before his death, a point of some controversy with Gipp's family.
