George Ellis Pugh (1822–1876)

Pugh was born and died in Cincinnati, Ohio. A lawyer and veteran of the Mexican War, he was later elected consecutively on the Democratic Party ticket as a state representative, state attorney general, and United States senator (the first native Ohioan in the Senate). In 1855, the year he was elected to the U.S. Senate, he was married, and shortly thereafter he and his wife converted to Catholicism.
