Commodore John Barry (1745–1803)

"Father of the American Navy"

Born in Ireland, Barry settled in Philadelphia at age 15. He captained a number of vessels during the Revolutionary War and was President Washington's choice as the top officer in the officially inaugurated United States navy in 1794. He is buried in the cemetery of St. Mary's Church in Philadelphia and his monument stands in Independence National Historical Park.
