First bishop of Vancouver Island (later Victoria, British Columbia), 1846–1871
A native of Quebec, Demers accompanied Francois Blanchet on his mission in the 1860s to the Oregon Territory, where the two served the French Canadians of the Hudson Bay Company and evangelized the Indians.
