Raphael Semmes (1809–1877)

Confederate naval officer

Descendant of an old Maryland Catholic family, Semmes became a commander in the US Navy. He shifted his allegiance to Alabama and the Confederacy at the outbreak of war and led significant campaigns against Union commercial and military vessels. After the war he operated a law office and taught at the college level in Mobile, Alabama.
