Terence V. Powderly (1849–1924)

Grand Master Workman, Knights of Labor, 1879–1893

The son of Irish immigrants, Powderly helped to convince the American bishops that membership in the Knights of Labor, the first major American labor union, was compatible with being Catholic. He realized an important victory when Cardinal Gibbons interceded in Rome to prevent Vatican condemenation of the Knights.
