Walker Percy (1916–1990)

Novelist

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Percy was trained as a medical doctor. He converted to Catholicism in 1947 and began writing, dissecting what he viewed as the pathologies of modern life. His 1962 novel, The Moviegoer, won the National Book Award, and he received the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame in 1989.
