Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, Texas

Established 1847

The first bishop of this southeastern Texas diocese was Bishop Jean Marie Odin. At the time of its creation, the Diocese of Galveston comprised the entire state. The Diocese of San Antonio split the western half of the state in 1874, and renaming to "Diocese of Galveston-Houston" in 1959 indicated the explosive growth of Texas' largest city. In 2004, the see joined San Antonio as the state's second archdiocese.
