Originally the Prefecture Apostolic of Indian Territy, the Diocese of Oklahoma was created two years before Oklahoma statehood. Its first bishop was Belgium-born Theophile Meerschaert. The diocese was divided into two in 1972 with the creation of the Diocese of Tulsa, and Oklahoma City became an archdiocese.
