Archdiocese of San Francisco, California

Established July 29, 1853

Originally under Spanish jurisdiction within the Diocese of Both Californias, the Mission Dolores (or Mission San Francisco) was founded in 1776. Upper California was separated as the Diocese of Monterey in 1849, and the region was further divided when San Francisco was made the seat of the northern area four years later. A Dominican, Joseph Alemany, was named its first archbishop.
