Archdiocese of St. Louis, Missouri

Established July 2, 1826

The first Catholic church in the region was built by Fr. Pierre Gibault in 1770. Pope Leo XII created the diocese out of the northern part of the vast jurisdiction of the Diocese of Louisiana and appointed Joseph Rosati as its first bishop. It was raised to archdiocese in 1847.
