The diocese traces its roots to Mission San Juan Capistrano. Reflecting the rapid population growth of southern California in the late twentieth century—including heavily Catholic Hispanic immigration—Orange was created out of the territory of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with William Johnson as its first bishop.
