Franciscan University of Steubenville

Steubenville, Ohio

Founded 1946

The first bishop of Steubenville, John Mussio, invited the Third Order Regular Franciscans to establish a college in the steel town on the banks of the Ohio River. The school nearly closed in the early 1970s but was reinvigorated by its new president, Fr. Michael Scanlan, TOR. It attained university status in 1980.
