Fr. John DuBois established the college as a preparatory seminary run by the Sulpician Order, and the seminary and university have remained closely connected ever since. It separated from the Sulpicians in 1826. After Georgetown, it is the nation's second-oldest Catholic college. Distinguished ecclesiastical alumni include Abp. John Hughes, Bp. William Quarter, Card. William Elder, and Abp. Michael Corrigan.
