Xavier University

Cincinnati, Ohio

Founded 1831

Xavier traces its origins to Bishop Fenwick's founding of the diocese's seminary and college, the Athenaeum. Fenwick transferred the college portion of the school to the Society of Jesus in 1840, whereupon it was renamed St. Xavier College. The institution purchased land for a new campus in 1911, and was named Xavier University in 1930.
