Father James Gillis, CSP (1876–1957)

Gillis was the editor of The Catholic World from 1922 to 1948. He was an influential commentator on public affairs and is perhaps best known for the line he penned following the defeat of Al Smith in 1928, when, perceiving the election as a referendum on the place of Catholics in America, he wrote defiantly: "We will not whither up and blow away."
