Archdiocese of Detroit

Established March 8, 1833

The man who had so much to establish the Church in Michigan, Fr. Gabriel Richard, died a year before the appointment of a bishop for the new diocese. John Frederic Reze instead became Detroit's first bishop. The see was raised to archdiocesan status in 1937.
