Archdiocese of Indianapolis (Diocese of Vincennes)

Established May 6, 1834

Fr. Pierre Gibault was among the missionaries who cultivated the Church in Indiana. A diocese was established at Vincennes in 1834, detaching the state of Indiana from the Diocese of Bardstown. Simon Brute de Remur was the first bishop. In 1898, the see was moved to Indianapolis and in 1944 it was made an archdiocese.
